Interstate Moving

Moving is a pain regardless of how far the move is, but even more so if you need to move from one state to another, also known as interstate moving. Intrastate moving, on the other hand, is simply moving to a new location within the same state. Since interstate moving requires movers to cross through state lines, the federal government has developed certain rules and regulations on these types of moves. Here is a list of information to consider with interstate moves.

  • The moving company needs to be licensed by the FMCSA and display their U.S. DOT number in any advertising as well as on the vehicle.
  • Arbitration needs to be provided if a consumer complaint can not be resolved amicably.
  • Homeowners (or anyone else moving) needs to be given a copy of the "Know Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" brochure.
  • The customers can have the option to review their tariff, which is a list of rates and charges for that particular shipment or move.
  • The moving company must furnish an accurate summary of their complaint handling procedures, including a phone number.

The FMCSA will not resolve complaints against an interstate mover but they may investigate a specific mover if the agency receives multiple documented complaints. To file a complaint against an interstate mover, call the FMCSA at 888-368-7238.
